In the North Texas region open space is becoming harder and harder to find. The 2,000 acres known as LLELA is one such place. Set aside for flood control after the construction of the Lewisville Lake dam, this property has been spared from development. It was not, however, spared from prior land use. The land use history includes farming, ranching, and a great deal of soil disturbance during the dam construction that ultimately saved it.

LLELA staff and volunteers work to preserve and restore these 2,000 acres to a functioning ecosystem while providing educational and experiential opportunities to the public such that they have a better understanding and appreciation for the natural heritage that belongs to all of North Texas.

Restoration efforts at LLELA are coordinated by staff of the University of North Texas's Advanced Environmental Research Institute
