Kayak Tours

LLELA's American Canoe Association-certified instructors lead tours for paddlers of all skill levels throughout the spring, summer, and fall on the Beaver Pond Paddling Trail when there is water in the pond. Paddlers receive an introduction to kayaking on dry land before pushing off into the water. All equipment is provided. Please check our calendar for upcoming dates. Don’t delay in registering; these trips fill up quickly when they are offered. $35/paddler (register in advance) plus the park entry fee at the gate. Art Boat

Art and nature go hand in hand, or sometimes paddle in water! Kayak to a secluded spot, dip a paintbrush in the calm water, and see how nature inspires you. You will make memories (and even a piece of art) on this unique kayak tour. All skill levels are welcome; paddlers receive an introduction to kayaking on dry land before pushing off into the water. River Kayak Tours

LLELA staff does not currently lead paddling tours on the river, but Kayak Power is an outside organization that offers a kayak tour of the Elm Fork of the Trinity River on the third Saturday of each month. Registration information for that activity is at kayakpower.org.

Things You'll Need to Know

• Register online. For daytime kayak tours, pay the $5/vehicle fee at the gate with credit or debit card only.  Gatehouse staff are not able to accept cash.

• Wear closed-toed shoes, long pants, long sleeves, a hat, and sunscreen.

• Bring AT LEAST one full (and refillable) water bottle per person.

• Check and prepare for any weather. We’ll try not to cancel due to weather unless it’s raining.

• Enjoy roughing it. LLELA is a completely outdoor facility without plumbing. There are clean portable toilets close to the Pavilion and river parking lots. You will have access to these areas before and after the kayak tour, but not during.

• Respect wildlife. LLELA is here to preserve wildlife and habitat. Please respect the animals and plants at all times. We ask all visitors to Leave No Trace: Leave nothing but footprints, take nothing but memories, kill nothing but time.

• Current Conditions

Still Water: The Beaver Pond is in the public portion of LLELA, but has a limited watershed and is prone to going dry during long periods of drought. Beaver Pond Paddling Trail conditions are posted on our home page under the Visit tab. McWhorter Creek is in an area of LLELA which is currently closed to public access. Please don't attempt to reach McWhorter Creek except on a guided tour.

Moving Water: The cities of Lewisville, Carrollton, and Irving have cooperated with several other organizations to open 22 miles of the Elm Fork to paddlers. LLELA hosts the northern-most access point for this newly-designated paddling trail, which had its grand opening in October 2014. See a map of the Elm Fork Paddling Trail. Entry to LLELA is $5/vehicle. Vehicles left at our parking lot must be picked up by closing time on the date of entry: 5 p.m. November 1-February 28 (winter hours); 7 p.m. March 1-October 31 (summer hours).
