Ecologically, there have been few improvements resulting from LLELA's land use history. However, one positive change was that the Army Corps of Engineers inadvertently created wetlands by digging borrow pits during the construction of the Lewisville Lake Dam. Over time, some aquatic species have managed to establish themselves in these pits. The development of the fish hatchery below the dam (circa 1970’s) and some seepage from the earthen dam has provided a relatively constant flow of lake water for some aquatic systems. Wetland restoration, or more correctly wetland creation, at LLELA has focused on transplanting native Texas aquatic plants to enhance these areas which provide wildlife habitat for a large number of species. The old fish hatchery, now known as the Lewisville Aquatic Ecosystem Research Facility (LAERF) has been an active partner in LLELA's wetland restorations.
