Geocaching is a worldwide game that feels a bit like a treasure hunt. Participants enter coordinates in a GPS receiver and use it to find a marked location, which is usually a point of geographical, historical, or scenic interest. Upon arriving at the coordinates, the geocacher searches the area for a hidden object or container. The geocache could be small (the size of a pencil eraser) or large (the size of an ammo can) or anything in between. In the case of the LLELA Geocache Adventure, participants search for 12 hidden letter tags. Participants find the tags and record each tag’s letter in the appropriate spot in a puzzle sheet. Once they are all found, the letters form a phrase. Successful geocachers can take the puzzle sheet with the completed phrase to the LLELA gatehouse to receive a patch. It may take more than one visit to LLELA to find all the letters, as they are spread out on four separate hiking trails. There's no need to complete the whole activity to receive the patch...the point is to give it a try, and have fun. 

The LLELA gatehouse has two GPS receivers available for checkout during open hours, and three printed copies of the activity directions in binders. First come, first served. A valid driver’s license must be left at the gatehouse as collateral for the return of the borrowed GPS receiver.

Geocachers MUST enter LLELA only during regular public hours (daily, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. March 1-October 31; 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. November 1-February 28). All visitors are required to enter LLELA through our gate at 201 E. Jones St., Lewisville, TX 75057. There is no public access along Business-121 Highway. There is a $5/vehicle daily fee.

The Geocache Adventure was designed by Boy Scout Andrew Turner (Troop 415, Lewisville, TX) as part of his effort to attain the rank of Eagle Scout. Andrew approached LLELA staff with his idea, developed the activity, designed and installed the letter tags on the trails, and donated two GPS receivers and give-away patches to LLELA for visitors to use. A big LLELA thank you goes out to Andrew Turner, as well as LLELA volunteers Clyde Camp, Van Elliott, and Mike Hagan for updating the Adventure in March 2018.
